JOHN EASTON

Co-Investigator

John Easton is a Professor of Sustainable Transport at Heriot-Watt University and is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, where he is a Lecturer working with the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education.

John’s current research interests centre on methods for the storage, processing and display of railway condition monitoring data – in particular data representation and exchange via ontologies and parallel, semi-autonomous processing by software agents – the application of machine learning in transport systems, the use of distributed ledger technologies in industrial contexts and cybersecurity.

A firm believer in the importance of building strong links to industry, John is a past chair of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s railway technical network, and currently chairs the Rail Engineers Forum, a group that links the railway special interest groups of the main Professional Engineering Institutions.
